Strathbogie Ranges Victoria Australia
Maygars Hill, the site of the vineyard, was named after Lt Col. Maygar who was awarded a Victoria Cross during the Boer War.
Welcome
This 20 acre property was acquired by Jenny Houghton in 1994, for its viticulture potential and as a location for her bed and breakfast cottage. Three acres was hand planted in 1997 into a light sandy loam. It is ideally situated in the Strathbogie Wine Region right on the border with the Goulburn Valley.
Planting has increased to 6 acres; 2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 acres of Shiraz. Strict viticultural policy with pruning, spraying and hand picking has achieved the required low yield per vine. This has consistently produced small berries of intense colour and flavour.
The altitude of 200 metres, combined with the light sandy loam and intensive monitoring, has produced grapes that enable a wine of elegance and complexity to be produced.

'Beautiful Cabernet'
Much to his pleasure, wine writer IAN DUNN has sampled a wonderful Cabernet from Maygars Hill Winery...
“Thus it was with considerable pleasure that I recently encountered Jenny Houghton’s latest (2013) Maygars Hill Cabernet Sauvignon ($24) from the Strathbogies. I think this is the best Maygars Cabernet for some years. It simply demands to be drunk. No austerity here! The fruit shines through, matching the tannins beautifully. The Deft Palate was mightily impressed but has been since complaining that she didn’t receive her fair share. If one wants to offer a current release Cabernet to guests knowing they will have no reservations, try this beauty. Maygars Hill has attracted rave reviews for some of its recent Shiraz. Now there is a Cabernet equally good at an extraordinary price.”

There are the usual range of Maygar aromas of plums and blackberry and this shows as richness on the palette. Tannins are integrating well with the intense fruit flavour to produce a balanced wine of great complexity. The long finish stays well after the glass is finished.
Once again this small patch of earth in the Strathbogie foothills has risen to the task of producing a splendid drop.
This wine will mature beautifully in the bottle or is suitable to drink right now.
On the 15th of April 2014 the best Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in ages was pressed to become The Beersheba.
